History
Acorn Community Care originally started in 2003 by providing local businesses in the Malton and Norton area, a Commercial Recycling Service. The Charity had then only 3 Trustees, two staff, 1 volunteer and 8 people who we supported to gain work-based experience. With funding from the European Union, Acorn bought a crew-cab pick-up and collected cardboard, aluminum and paper from local businesses and took it to Ryedale District Council Depot on Showfield Lane for processing. Acorn was based there until 2007. People with disabilities gained skills by working to recycle these materials which were then sold, generating a small income. The charity also provided a Community Gardening Project. With the Safer Ryedale Group (Adult Social Services and the local Police), the people we supported would help older people in the community to maintain their gardens to a standard whereby deterring crime (break-ins and burglaries of vulnerable people who often lived on their own or who had little or no close family members).
Ryedale District Council was very supportive of the Charity in these early years, but we needed more space as we grew, and alternative accommodation was sought. Through the Community Gardening Project, the Charity became involved in working at Whinflower Hall in Norton, clearing trees and maintaining the gardens. When the opportunity arose to take over the lease in 2008, the Charity began to look at ways of generating more income and providing a more diverse range of services for local people in Ryedale and the surrounding areas.
We now support many Adults with Learning and Physical Disabilities within the Ryedale area on the farm and within their own homes. Read our Testemonials
